Blurb: A vinyl package redesign for indie artist, Dominic Fike’s, debut album ‘What Could Possibly Go Wrong’ released in the era-defining year of 2020.
The Brief & The Goal
Our cohort was tasked with redesigning a vinyl cover for any album of choice. The album I chose was ‘What Could Possibly Go Wrong?’ by Dominic Fike. To me, this album bottled up all of the joy, confusion and frustration of being a young adult who’s trying to find, invent or preserve themselves in this world. Fike’s music handled the irony of how alienating that universal human experience feels beautifully ~ effectively injecting a sense of playfulness into messages which were raw, gritty and vulnerable. This resonated deeply with my aspirations as a creative and I wanted my redesign to really represent this narrative; in a way which also aligned with Fike’s prevailing brand character and felt realistic and compelling within today’s alt-music scene.
The Idea & The Magic
The final design leans into the alienation concept and uses strong contrast, varying levels of luminosity and juxtaposition throughout its visual elements to highlight all of the conflicting emotions young adults experience. The imagery is desperate and hopeful. The colour palette is punchy and dreamy. It aligns with Fike’s eclectic musical character and is also crammed full of personal subliminal meanings screaming to be heard. Ultimately, I really wanted the redesign to be as confronting as it was whimsical in representation of how we all romanticise and brutalise our beautiful, complex young adult years.
